Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives announced today that current Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, will become the minority leader in the 112th Congress.
The Washington Post reports that Pelosi was elected minority leader with a secret vote of 150 to 43, and that she had one competitor for the position: Heath Shuler (D-N.C.)
Pelosi announced shortly before the midterm elections that she would seek to run for minority leader, and that she will still campaign strong for Democrats, if elected.
"We have no intention of allowing our great achievements to be rolled back. It is my hope that we can work in a bipartisan way to create jobs and strengthen the middle class,” Pelosi said in a statement released before she was elected as minority leader.
Democrats lost control of the House of Representatives in the 2010 midterm election. As of Nov. 17, the Republicans gained 64 seats, and a sizable majority in the House.
The Democrats managed to keep hold of the Senate, with a six-seat lead.
Current House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) will succeed Pelosi as House majority leader next year when the 112th Congress reconvenes.
